Transit Part 2: Hub Concept in Other Travel Industries

Within the travel industry as a whole we have airlines, bus lines, and to a smaller degree, passenger trains.  All three use a type of hub concept wherein passengers who desire to travel from point to point by way of their respective service must somehow get to the hub (or station or terminal) where they will board the train, plane or bus that will help them get to their destination.

Let’s look at the passenger bus line industry a bit closer, and more specifically Greyhound.  Greyhound has service to and from only selected major cities.  Using either smaller bus line services, local or regional mass transit services, taxis or the aid of family and friends, people who wish to travel by way of Greyhound travel by some more locally oriented means to the nearest Greyhound depot (hub) where they will be able to board a bus that will take them to another bus depot (hub) that is closest to their final destination.

This concept is efficient because Greyhound is able to put many more passengers onto each of their buses when they are all going in the same general area serviced by the depot (hub) of a larger city or metro area.  From there, the passengers use other more local services or the aid of family and friends to get from the depot (hub) to their final destination.

At the same time, there are many passengers who travel on smaller bus lines only within their local or regional area who do not need to travel on Greyhound, which focuses the bulk of their routes on the longer runs and such as between major cities or metro areas.

Thank you for taking time to read my program.  Obviously, if I didn't believe in my own program, I would not have published it for others to read and ponder on.
