Transit Part 1: Customer Oriented Travel Goals

Under my program, we will first seek to learn from the customer what they want to accomplish as part of the travel arrangements they are seeking to make before we simply “add them to a route and tell them when to be ready.

Customer oriented travel planning, simply stated, means starting with the customer’s final goal and working backwards from there.  The customer would be asked what time they want to be done all of their travels for the day and where they want to be when they are done.

We will then work backwards from there discussing and making allowances for both travel time required getting from each point of origin to each point of destination as well as the time required at each location.  By the time we fully understand the customer’s goals and the time required to allow us to accomplish getting them in a safe and on-time manner, the customer will be more likely to understand and work with us when it means getting up early to be ready when the bus arrives.  When a customer has a specific appointment, that appointment represents a mid-day travel goal that is also to be respected.

Thanks to current technology, much of the process associated with what I’m describing can be done over the internet or on tables or smart phones.  This will allow our live customer service schedulers to talk with those who need the extra assistance.

This helps the customer to believe that we care and are trying to work with them in every way possible.  They will, in turn, be more likely to work with us when we need them to be flexible.  Performing this part of my program could be compared, at least in a small way, to what the agent in a travel agency does when talking to a customer about their travel goals.  We’re just not scheduling airplane and cruise ship rides.

Thank you for taking time to read my program.  Obviously, if I didn't believe in my own program, I would not have published it for others to read and ponder on.
